Raymond Payne, Managing Partner

Raymond Payne founded Cerner Capital Management in 2001. An experienced financial advisor, Ray’s 30-year financial services background includes tax, financial analysis, planning and management positions at MCI Communications, GE Capital, and Arthur Andersen & Co. He is a certified public accountant (GA), a registered investment advisor (GA), and a Series 65 Licensee. He earned a B.S. in accounting (magna cum laude) from Florida A&M University.  Ray is currently a member of the Georgia Society of CPAs, where he sits on the Estate and Financial Planning Advisory Council.

Ray’s clients hire him for his financial acumen. They stay because of his solid financial counsel, empathy, willingness to listen, and belief in individualized service that makes his counsel relevant. Whether it’s figuring out how much house you can afford, how much you should be saving for college or retirement, estate planning, or managing investments and taxes, your financial situation and your financial goals are unique. Ray believes your solutions should be, too.

A Personal Note

What part do you play in Cerner Capital and why?

As managing partner, I work alongside Cerner Capital’s team members and other outside subject matter experts to deliver customized service solutions to our clients by listening to them and getting a clear understanding of what is important to them.

What does Wealthcare mean to you?

Wealthcare is our holistic and integrated approach to our clients’ financial wellbeing. It means we are focused on how we can help make our clients’ personal balance sheets stronger and healthier. This includes helping clients structure financial transactions to minimize taxes and to invest assets tax-efficiently while managing risks, as well as advising them on the best ways to save for everything important, from college to retirement.

What’s the most important thing people should know about Wealthcare?

It’s not just about financial assets. Rather, it’s a life-long endeavor encompassing life-changing events that affect you financially, from marriage and starting a family to paying for college, changing jobs, and saving for retirement. We believe financial planning is a process that changes as your life changes, that grows with you; not a bunch of files stored on a computer.

What’s the biggest challenge in what you do?

The biggest challenge is helping our clients crystalize their goals and explaining the various trade-offs of competing financial alternatives.

What’s the one thing everyone should know about Cerner Capital?

We are a fee-only firm. We don’t sell products or accept commissions. The only thing we have to offer is our knowledge and experience.

What have you done, professionally, that you’re most proud of?

Celebrating Cerner Capital’s 17th anniversary. In the beginning, it was just a series of thoughts about how to deliver financial counsel meaningfully and effectively. Seventeen years later, we’re doing exactly that.

And personally?

A treasure trove of friends (including my family) that has enriched my life in very different ways.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A pilot! And now flying is one of my least favorite things to do.

What do you outside the office?

I spend my time outside of the office with family and friends doing what family and friends do together: eating, drinking, and laughing.

Favorite Movies: Book of Eli, Crimson Tide, Forrest Gump, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, John Q, Shawshank Redemption

Favorite Books: Intelligent Investor, The Most Important Thing, anything by Malcolm Gladwell

A Personal Note

What about you makes this the right job for you? What makes you good at what you do?

A strong work ethic, a desire to learn and educate, and a passion for helping people find true financial freedom make me good at what I do. At Cerner Capital, I help people understand their finances and build wealth – and I get to learn from and support Ray Payne, one of the best in the industry!

What have you done, professionally, that you’re most proud of?

Much of my professional career has been in sales. While working for one of the largest communications companies in the world, I earned membership into the Gold Club by surpassing sales objectives and being among the top 10% of all sales professionals nationally. Likewise, while working for one of largest U.S. financial services companies, I continued exceeding yearly sales goals by as much as 144%. I was successful because I had a personal commitment to be a trusted advisor to my clients—and that’s what I’m most proud of.

And personally?

My children. They are kind, compassionate, articulate, high academic achievers, sensitive, humorous, humble, and honest. They are respectful of authority and lead their peers by example. They’re my greatest accomplishment.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A cash register (funny, but true), a teacher, a professional organizer, an accountant, an entrepreneur, and a Certified Financial Planner.

What do you outside the office?

The most enjoyable thing I do outside of the office is take care of my family. In addition, I enjoy learning, reading, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Favorite movies: The Notebook, Love Jones, Shooter, The Pursuit of Happyness, The Help, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, and the Fast & Furious and Toy Story series.

Favorite books: My favorite book is the Bible. It offers wisdom, inspiration, guidance, humor, and great drama.

A Personal Note

What about you makes this the right job for you? What makes you good at what you do?

I have always loved math and the magic of numbers. I also enjoy wrestling with the complexities of the tax code - yes, I’m a nerd. More importantly though, I care about my clients - real people with real families, real struggles, and real concerns. It is my job to provide them with the most thorough and highest quality representation regarding their tax and financial wellbeing.

What have you done, professionally, that you’re most proud of?

I was a member of the team that handled the largest corporate spin-off in history. It was a very exciting and challenging engagement, but the spirit and cohesion of the team was the most amazing part.

And personally?

Getting a college degree after struggling for many years. There were many obstacles, but I kept moving forward, even if slowly at times. I’m glad I stuck with it. Having a degree has changed my life in ways I could never have imagined.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A teacher, an author, a doctor, a tennis pro, and a rock star. Now, I want to be a professional downhill skier.

What do you do outside the office?

I love football, college and professional. I also love March Madness, although I wish it were May or June Madness since it is right in the middle of tax season. My favorite activity, though, is hiking with my dogs which we do several times a week.

Favorite movies: Legends of the Fall, The Notebook, and every Jaws movie (even the bad sequels).

Favorite books: My favorite genre is historical fiction and my favorite book of all time is Rise to Rebellion, which brings our founding fathers to life in ways you must read to believe.
